6 Signs It's Time To Update Your Headshots

You already have headshots, so is there really a need to update them? Ideally, your headshots could do with an update every two years, especially in certain industries such as film and theatre. Professional or corporate headshots should also be updated relatively consistently as well, so that you continue to put your best, most current face forward.

Still not convinced you need to invest in a new set of headshots? Here are a few signs that it’s time:

1. You’ve aged.

It happens to the best of us! If you’ve noticed some changes in the mirror (or, if you’re like me, you see a recent photo of yourself and think, Who IS that person with all those lines?!?!), it’s probably a good idea to update your headshots. The reality is that your headshots need to look recent, so aging is the first good reason to consider updating your headshots. This is particularly important if your appearance plays a role in you getting work. It’s also off-putting to show up in person looking considerably different from your 15-year-old headshot. Also, your age suggests that you have a wealth of life experience and wisdom, so don’t be afraid of natural signs of aging. (When you work with me, I’ll help you put the best possible spin on the signs of aging with flattering posing and line softening - NOT removal - during the retouching process.)

2. You’ve updated your look.

Has your weight changed significantly? Have you changed your hairstyle or had surgery? This is another sign that it’s time to schedule another headshot session with your photographer. If people don’t recognize you when they meet you, it can come off as untrustworthy. Using an old, outdated headshot that doesn’t match your current appearance also communicates a lack of self-confidence. Even if you are feeling less-than-confident with your current appearance, a great way to get a boost of self-love is to create a fantastic headshot. I’ll elicit a confident, approachable, friendly expression that starts with the eyes and ends with the mouth, all while keeping your body in a flattering position. You’ve got this, friend!

3. Your current headshots are trendy.

If the last time you took headshots you followed a particular trend, whether this was a style of photo or fashion, it’s time to update your images. Unfortunately, trends never last long, which means your headshots quickly become outdated. Rather opt for a timeless look and photo style for the best results.

4. You’re often contacted about roles you’re uninterested in.

This one is specific to any actors reading this. If you frequently get calls about roles that aren’t your type, it’s time to consider whether your headshots are sending the right message.

5. People often don’t recognize you.

This one applies to anyone from any sector. If potential employers, clients, or business partners often tell you how different you look in person, you might want to update your headshots.

6. You’ve never had professional headshots done.

If you’ve made it this far in your career without a professional headshot, it’s definitely time to do your online presence justice and get yourself a kick-@ss headshot that communicates your expertise and professionalism. I’m shocked at how many upper-level professionals I see on LinkedIn with mediocre (or worse), homemade headshots. Let’s fix that, OK?
