In short…
Yes, for most people.
But there’s a bit more to the story. To see if hiring a professional hair and makeup artist is the right choice for your professional photo shoot, read on!
What does a professional makeup artist do?
The answer might seem obvious, but a professional makeup artist brings a complete kit of makeup and tools to your shoot to be able to address any skin needs you might have. When you hire a professional makeup artist, she will have everything she needs to prep your skin, correct any redness, blemishes, or dark circles, smooth lines, apply the correct formulation (and most importantly, color!) of foundation for your skin type, and select colors for your eyes, cheeks, and lips that will complement your skin, eyes, and wardrobe. (For professional looks, we typically stick with timeless colors that accentuate your features and help you bring your most polished self to the camera.)
Will I look like a completely different person?
Your headshot needs to accurately represent what you look like while also presenting the most polished version of yourself that exudes confidence, capability, and strength. This confidence-boosting service is what we provide for each of our clients. We begin by showing you a range of looks and you tell us what style you’re comfortable with. We start on the lighter end with color application, since we can always add more product for areas that need more definition. Our styling team’s goal is always to make you look like YOU - just the best version of you!
I have very dark/very fair skin. Will the makeup artist have the correct colors for my skin tone?
Yes, our makeup artists are fully equipped with colors to match every skin tone.
I’m pretty good at doing my own makeup/hair. Do I really need a stylist?
I recommend that nearly everyone hire at least a makeup artist. It really does make a significant difference in the final portrait. In my 11 years of business, I’ve only had one client come back for a reshoot because she wasn’t happy with her makeup. But if you feel uncomfortable with anyone else doing your makeup or hair, I’d rather you do your own with confidence than be worried about your makeup and hair!
If I have a hair stylist, how will she know how to style my hair?
Bring a couple of photos of hairstyles you like to show the stylist for guidance. These can be styles you found online or photos of yourself with a style you loved. We typically do soft waves that frame the face or use a straightener, depending on your preferences, but our stylists will ask you what you want and make sure you are happy with your style before they leave..
If I’m having my hair and makeup done, how should I arrive at the studio?
Please arrive with clean and dry hair (day-old hair is fine as long as your scalp isn’t oily) and a bare face. The stylist will have everything else she needs to complete your look. You might bring your own powder or blotting paper for touch-ups if you’re doing a Signature headshot session or a Personal Branding session.
How do I find a stylist?
We work with a select group of hair and makeup stylists that have been a part of our team for several years. We are happy to make the appointment for you if you wish to book a hair stylist, makeup artist, or both.
How much does hair and makeup styling cost?
It depends on the stylist, but you can expect to spend between $175-$250 for both hair and makeup. You will pay the stylist(s) directly but I make all the arrangements for you. Easy peasy!
What happens if I don’t like my makeup or hairstyle?
If you are using one of our stylists, we are here to make sure you’re happy! If your look isn’t right, please speak up! We will make sure we understand what you want changed and make it right. Our stylists don’t leave until you love your look!
Hair and makeup styling is just for women, right?
Not necessarily! I’ve photographed male CEOs and EVPs that were accustomed to having stylists on their sets and requested styling services for their headshots. Usually, just a bit of powder is needed to tamp down shine, and a stylist can give your hair a great camera-ready look. (Keep in mind though, that it’s a hairstyle, not a cut, so be sure you get your hair cut ahead of time!) Our stylist can also trim any stray hairs around the neckline, nose, eyebrows, or ears to make sure your whole look is on point.
